70's Renken Ski w/Johnson 85hp T&T

I am considering the purchase of a 70s Renken ski boat with a Johnson V4 85hp that has HYDRO-ELECTRIC drive. I was told that the engine needs a new powerpack. The hull itself is in good shape but is in need of seats. It also comes with a single axle trailer. The guy wants $350 but I think that he will give a little. Good buy or not?

If the engine has good compression (over 100 psi and within 10% of each other) the engine is MAYBE sound. You can still hook a battery up to it make sure it turns over and shifts. I would be most worried about the electric shift and electrical problems.<br /><br />If you LIKE the hull and are looking for a project-why not? $350.00 leaves you a lot of room to go for improvements later.
