71 100hp points??????

my engine cover says my 71 100hp has electronic ignition, my definition of electronic ignition is that it doesn't need/require points. so how does this have electronic ignition but apparently from what I have read have they have points?

do they all have points?

at least if it does i have somewhere else to hunt my weak spark from

electronic ignition and points how the hell does that work

any help would be great

Yes it has points. But they are used for a different purpose than the old coil/points/condenser system. The CD "brain" (amplifier) takes 12V from the battery and converts (amplifies) it to about 300 volts. When it is time to fire, that 300 volts is discharged through the primary winding of the coil. Now....any ignition system needs something to tell it WHEN to fire. In your motor, that "something" is two sets of breaker points. In the old points system, they carried a high amperage current and arced and burned. In your system, they carry very little current, only a signal, so they don't arc and burn. However, they are a mechanical device and do eventually wear just because of movement and friction.

The newer systems used a more "reliable" magnetic system. Probably more what you were expecting to see. Magnetic induction would send a pulse to the amplifier signaling it to fire the coil just like points would "signal" a coil to fire by momentaraly grounding the coil. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, I think totally electronic ignitions didn't appear until around '75.

After doing some research I guess it's better to say widely used until '75 or so. I saw some timing bases back to '68, but it seems that the next year there is no timing base listed until '72 or '73 on some models, while others show '72 on. I guess it just depends on year and model.
