Hello

I have a question about putting a seal kit in the lower unit. Here are some pictures of my motor and the seal kit I have. Well I hope you can see the pictures. Anyway what I hope to resolve is the drive shaft seal just below the water pump and above the drive shaft bearing. My manual says use a seal puller to remove this seal. But as you can see from the pictures ( I hope) my motor has a brass bushing above the shaft bearing. Also the seal from the kit that is the same diameter as this bushing does not fit the drive shaft. Whats up? do I have the wrong kit? there are two smaller seals that do fit the drive shaft but they are smaller diameter than the area where the brass bushing is. I tried to take good clear picture to show what I mean.

Basically, I just need help in putting a seal kit in my lower unit.

Oh yeah, the numbers on my motor. 18102s - E10283 Its a 71. I bought the seal kit from this site and I double checked to make sure thats the kit I need and it is supposed to be.

Thanks

Re: 71 18 fastwin lower unit seal kit

I am having a very similar problem with a 1974 40hp johnson. I took the lower unit apart because of water pump problems. When I took the cover off I saw that my brass seal was completely rusted with about five or six holes. I have yet to purchase the seal kit because the parts shown don't look like they would fit. Any help would be appreciated.

That brass bushing in pic #3 has the seal in it. Yes, you need to remove it with a seal puller. Be careful not to burr or nick the surrounding metal when you take the bushing out. The brass bushing/seal in the kit should replace the old one. The driveshaft should fit through that seal - if it doesn't something is wrong - wrong seal? Is the hole too big? The other two seals are for the prop shaft. Not sure why there are two - I was thinking the prop shaft on that motor only used one, but I could be wrong. Seems when I replaced the prop shaft seal on by 1972 18hp there was only one, but that was about five years ago so I may be wrong.

Ok I'm not convinced that I have the correct seal. Maybe I looked at it wrong but it sure seemed loose when I slid the seal over the drive shaft last night. the smaller seals in the picture seemed to fit the shaft snugly, but they are to small to press into that spot.
Is there a way to remove that seal without a special seal puller?

Yea, something doesn't seem right. I don't see a driveshaft seal in that lower.

edit: you shouldn't have to remove the bearing to replace the driveshaft seal. I wondering if someone reversed it?

Yes, drive shaft should fit snugly or water will get in. A seal puller is only about $10-15 at an auto parts store - that's the most efficient way to get the old seal out.

Thanks

I just went back to the parts list and looked at the picture of the mallory 9-74105 seal kit. It shows 4 seals in the picture. I'm guessing the extra seals are for some other application this kit fits. I guess they might have left the shaft seal out of my kit? There are only 3 seals. I took them out of the bag and laid everything out like you see in the picture. Bad luck I guess

about your edit, The bearing is below the seal if thats what it is. It looks like a solid brass bushing to me. Maybe thats how they sealed them.

Yup - mine looks just like that. By the way, the seal is in that brass bushing - that one looks like original to me. The replacement kits have cheaper seals that are not as thick as the originals. May have a circular spring behind them to apply tension to the shaft.

Thanks Lindy

$5.00 at Harbor Freight. I guess I will just have to try and order the seal kit again I am almost certain the one that fits there is to big for the drive shaft.
Going to check when I get home.

Re: 71 18 fastwin lower unit seal kit

Update

What I thought was a bushing was a seal just like yall said. The factory seal is much different than what came in the kit. It turns out that the two smaller seals are the correct size. Sure looked small when setting over the top of the old seal.Anyway got out the seal with my new seal puller. Also drove out the brass sleeve for the shifter rod seal.

Thanks to all for the help
