Replaced water pump impeller.Motor cranks and runs, motor will not pee,What could it be?
What can I check next? Could it be compression ?

Well, compression won't have anything to do with it peeing. I would remove the thermostat and see if water gushes out when you start it. It could possibly be the thermostat was the problem and not your impeller. You'll find a small wedge shaped cover with three 7/16 bolts or slot head screws mounted on top of the head.

Is the water level 1/2 way up the leg or higher? Often that is the only problem. Best of luck. Rick.

Make sure it's in enough water to pump as well.

Yea, it's best to have the water level at least to where the lower shock mounts are.

Water is well up on motor , can't find a thermostat on the motor.

It would be on top of the head, directly above the spark plugs:cool:

Re: 71 6 hp evinrude

oh, so somebody removed it.....okay. Well, start the motor up with that cover removed and see if water comes out. If not, then you either missed the water tube when you re-installed the lower unit, or you may have an obstruction in the tube, where it goes into the exhaust housing. Often times, with motors that have had a lot of salt water use, corrosion will plug off the passage, where the water tube does into. I've had to drill those out before and get water flowing through there again.

Re: 71 6 hp evinrude

Your motor has a bypass tube in the back of the head - you can see it if you pull the cover and look. This tube allows water flow, even if the t-stat is in place and is closed. If you don't see water coming out of the back of the exhaust housing when the engine is running, you have a problem.

Drop the gearcase again and make sure that the water tube was inserted into the top of the water pump housing, when you put it all back together. As long as you have it apart, you might want to spray water up the water tube with a hose, as well. This may help clean out the passages and let you know if you have free flow upstream of the water pump.

Lots of great suggestions for you to consider. I would only add........if you drop the leg for any reason, hook a hose to the water tube and give the engine a good flush with city water. Rick.

Re: 71 6 hp evinrude

Haaa...I also have a 71 6hp that I have the SAME problem with. I took it apart and replaced the impeller and housing. I removed the 3 bolts on top of the motor where the thermostat is and when I ran the motor no water pumped up. I am able to get water from the top down when I remove the lower unit. I was able to get water from the impeller down....I also hooked up a drill and barely any water pumped out so I am also having a real issue.

For now I ended up buying a 78 seahorse for $150 that works GREAT, it also has the "tell tale" that the 71 does not have but I am dying to figure this one out.

Re: 71 6 hp evinrude

hi.
i'm the ovner of jo6hp_73y and evinrud6hp from 78 or so.
in my obserwatiom this motors have the same water pump from the look.but when i measure the water pump impeler so i can tell that the older(73y) have thicker impeler(-i think it was the orginal one) then this 78 one it is about 2 mm.i put thicker impeler to this 78 y one and water was floating very well.but when i put thiner one to this 73 y engine i could'nt get no stream.
my conclusion is you should measure thiknes of this water pump impeler you put in water pump housing.
sometimes water pump can loos underpresure and not taking water.check if your pump is pomping water by ataching drill machine to drive shaft.
in the past my waterpump was loosing underpresure, so i put thin wascher bitween water pump impeler and housing-dimenosion 0.5x11x23mm
