71 85hp Evinrude Small.large prop shaft?

Guys:

I've been a constant lurker on this board and appreciate all of the advice and wealth of knowledge that you've all bestowed. Many of us couldn't be on the water without you! I try to buy ALL of the parts that I can from Iboats due to the forum. Some other vendors sell you parts, but Iboats sells you parts and allows you FREE access to a tremendous base of knowledge to help you get the parts installed!

My prob: I have a 1971 Evinrude 85hp motor and am moving forward with replacing impeller and lower unit seals (while I have LU dropped). I'm attempting to order lower unit seal kit and see two listed. Can someone tell me if I need Large Shaft or Small Shaft seals???

Also, is there any other tuneup/ maint. one would recommend while I have this lower unit dropped?

By looking at the parts breakdown I don't see two different size seals available. Are you looking at a site that shows a factory breakdown?

Yes this link will take you to the Iboat spreadsheet that lists two different seal kits for the 1971 85hp motor.

Must be my computer, I can't open that site. On the oem site i was looking at they don't offer an option for a 1971 85 hp. They don't list a kit, just the different seals for the lower unit. You must be looking at a generic kit that covers several different lower units.

Lets try it this way.

Iboats.com, then select:
--> Boat part and accessories
--> Boat Motor parts
-->Evinrude Outboard Parts (under outboard motor parts)
-->Evinrude Lower Unit Seal Kits (locater under Outbaord Drive parts)
The spreadsheet should appear.

In it, two kits for a 1971 85hp motor is listed. One for Small prop shaft, the other for large prop shaft.

I appreciate any assistance provided!

I see what you mean, those are sierra kits, usually put togeather kits to fit several different applications. I found a sierra catalog that breaks down the kit numbers. The kit #18-2691 has 2 of the PN330137 in it, the other kit does not list that seal number.

You could look up the OEM seal number and call sierra to be sure. I normally order the seperate seals that I need rather than a generic kit.

I am sure someone versed in the sierra kits will come along and confirm the numbers for you.
