I have a `71 Evinrude 50 hp model number 50173s. I have a service manual and parts catalog for my specific motor. I am in the process of rebuilding the carburetors and when I went to remove the slow speed needle valves it was not a needle valve, it was just a screw with a rubber o-ring. I also have 3 jets per carb that are fixed, with my manual is only showing 2. one being fixed high speed and the slow speed with low speed needle valve. All of the linkage for the slow speed mixture knob on the outside of the motor housing has been removed before I owned it. Are these carbs off another motor? The parts numbers that are stamped in to the carb housing and the float bowl do not match my parts numbers in the catalog. Are these carbs off of another motor? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: `71 Evinrude 50 hp Carb Questions

It is similar to my carbs but the throttle linkage goes through a different spot and I have another jet located just below the core plug on the top of the carb. The part number on the carb housing is 323832 and the number on the float bowl is 313355.

Re: `71 Evinrude 50 hp Carb Questions

I just rebuilt my carbs on my 50173s, they are as you described in your manual. Yours are definately newer. At the website mentioned above look up your bowl #s and your carb body parts #s this should bring you which year carbs are on your engine.

Re: `71 Evinrude 50 hp Carb Questions

Thanks w2much for the info. I have tried to find what year the carbs are and everywhere I put in the part numbers it says not available. The float bowl came up but no info on the year and horse power. There is no way to adjust the mixture or the idle on this setup so I am lost. The`79 Evinrude 50 hp has a carb that looks identical to the ones I have but the part numbers are different. Now I guess the question is... Is it worth it to try to rebuild the ones that I have or should I try to locate OEM carbs?
The motor is on a 16' aluminum flat bottom and would only push it 16 mph. Very sluggish on acceleration and would not reach WOT. I have been through the ignition side and everything checks out. The reed valves are in great condition. Has to be something with the carbs right?
All I want to do is fish and the trolling motor only gets me so far. :) Thanks guys.
