I have a old 18 HP Fastwin. It runs pretty good normally. Right now I am having a heck of a time starting the sucker as the twist grip kicks back clockwise every time I pull the starter rope. I pulled it apart and everything appeared to be okay. I cleaned the crud and grease off the friction washer area and added an extra washer to the works to increase pressure on the friction area but it still won't stay put when I pull the rope. It also will not idle correctly. I have the carb/mag synced correctly but unless I manually reach down and open the throttle on the carb a little it won't idle. Help please. Bob

Flywheel magnets are dragging on the coil laminations. If not that, then something has come loose under the flywheel.....a fix NOW situation.

You are correct sir. I pulled the flywheel and sure enough the two were barely rubbing. Very little scratching took place thankfully. It still idles and runs at low speed for crap. Mid-high range runs very smooth and strong in the tank anyway. But at least I can start it now. Thanks. Bob
