Re: 71 Grew SS-165

If you like it buy it!
It looks to be an exceptionally clean, original , nice rig. Provided it runs well and is solid in the transom & stringer N floor...looks great! A proud owner will tell you every detail of the boat.

Re: 71 Grew SS-165

Welcome aboard Purcell:

A word of caution: The boat looks like it's in fantastic shape, and I've heard very good things about Grew (never seen one personally). The sterndrive on that critter is a '71 OMC Electric Shift Stringer. It looks like it might be in good shape. That said, the drive system is antiquated, a little finicky and obsolete (OMC has been out of business for years). Parts are not impossible to find (frankly, I've had no real problems), but marine mechanics won't want to work on it for you.

Basically, that drive would be one you'd have to be your own mechanic on and be prepared to deal with all the stuff that comes with it. Ask me how I know

I will tell you that I like mine, and even find some things about it superior to more modern Mercruisers. But it will make a mechanic outta' ya'. Plan on extra garage time, and some hassles.

On top of that, you'll be the object of ridicule here in the forum rather regularly ... but, in good company. :D
