I got this motor from a junkyard last year. Got it running well and mounted it on my 17' Boston Whaler. I thought it was strange that it only had two holes for mounting bolts. After finding a parts manual, I see why. There's a couple brackets I don't have that are included in what the parts manual calls a transom mount kit. My local dealer says these parts are no longer available. Anyone have an idea where they can be gotten -- or whether they're even necessary?

Old Head,

Yes the 71 had a different mounting system. It consisted of two brackets that the permanent engine bracket slid down into.

You might try these guys for a pair.

www.twincityoutboard.com

those brackets were used from 1960 to 1972. There was a bolt on each bracket that went into a recess on each side of the motor mounting plate to keep it from moving upwards.

In 1973, the motor bracket was made to bolt directly to the transom. They all use the same bolt pattern today that first came out in 1960.

Thanks Seahorse.

I take it that mounting the motor with only two bolts, without the brackets, is unwise?
