71 Johnson 60hp condenser / spark issue

I have a 71 60hp Johnson with some issues. Model number is 60ESL71C.

it will run for about 10 seconds, then shut off. the condenser / capacitor is extremely hot after running, too hot to touch. if I check the spark, it will not spark across the plug gap when connected to my spark tester. but will spark if I move the plug away from the ground ( spark jumps across plug gap, then from plug to the ground.

after it runs for a couple of seconds, you have to let it sit for about 2 hours, then it will run again for a couple of seconds, etc...etc...

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Ok, I meant to say the coil is getting extremely hot, also, the coil has "for breakerless ignitions" yet I have points.....

Re: 71 Johnson 60hp condenser / spark issue

Hmmm...does not look like the one I have on my 1971 60hp 3cyl Johnson
I replaced the fuse holder on mine from the short glass style to the flat
style fuse holder but everything else in the pics should be close to factory
parts on mine...take a look.....
I an not an expert...not even close:D on outboards....don't know about
your problems....sorry:rolleyes:
Hmmm now that you have been warned....looks like someone tried to
replace the amplifier and the coil with non original...or even regular aftermarket parts with something totally different....with the late 1960s and early 1970s mopar...Dodge,Crysler,Plymouth....they used a ballast resistor with their coils and points.....hmmmm....I think I've seen somewhere on this web site people giving advice on how to use automotive coils on outboards...forgot where I saw this....:(

Re: 71 Johnson 60hp condenser / spark issue

Somebody has obviously been monkeying around with that motor. Those are not the parts it is supposed to have. Looks like yet another attempt at replacing the amplifier with a car coil. It wouldn't be the first time it has been tried, but it would be the first time that I know of if it does work. Lots of luck.

BTW, what do you mean it checks out with the wiring diagram? No way!!

Here are some more downsized diagrams...they are far better quality..if I
would not have to downsize them :(
Good luck with your outboard;)

Re: 71 Johnson 60hp condenser / spark issue

Turns out the plugs were bad as well as the automotive coil.

it runs great now, after replacing the coil with a new one that was meant for breaker-points, and adding an external resistor, and new condensor, all is well.

thanks for the help guy's
