71' johnson 9.5 - fuel filter leak

My 71' Johnson 9.5hp will not idle worth a darn... I see my fuel filter is leaking gas/oil. I tried to replace the gasket with a new homemade gasket (same cork looking material I picked up at the auto parts store) and it still didn't correct the leak. Do they sell new fuel filter gasket kits?? I assume this is making my motor shudder at idle speed?? Any info. is much appreciated!

A new gasket, well made should have done the trick. Sometimes the problem is a crack in the outer plastic where the screen resides. I would guess parts are available but I'm not certain. Look here and you will see. Best of luck. Rick.

Parts for the fuel pump can be bought at Crowlley Marine or here on Iboats. I always replace the pump diafram, plastic cover and all gaskets when rebuilding a pump as if one thing is bad the chances of others are bad is very good. The plastic cover for the pump will crack easy if the screw holding it on is overtightend. JMO

Thanks guys for the info. I ordered new gaskets for the pump so we will see if this does the trick.

I will be taking it apart to see if all the parts (layers) are all alined like they should but I can't seem to find a good diagram of the correct sequence of putting it back together. I see this website is good but i can't access the website for some reason :

Thanks for the link, Rick! Wowzzers! I wish I didn't have to disassemble it but I'm pretty sure all the prices aren't in the right place... That website should help me get them all together the correct way.

Fixed the fuel pump and that wasn't the problem.... still idles rough... might have to pull the flywheel and check the coils and stuff.. Thanks for the info anyways!
