Well I took my head off because I am replacing it, and when I took the cap off of my thermostat, there wasnt one in there. Just the cap and then an empty tube. What does this indicate and why would someone do that?

so now that I only have the cap, do I need just the thermostat, gasket, and seal?

or is there more than needs to be in there? I think the seal might be attached to some thermostats..correct?

Re: 71 johnson 9.5 - no thermostat

Some folks pull out the thermostat if it is giving them problems, such as a thermostat stuck closed which would cause an engine overheat. If you pull out the thermostat, it would act as if the thermostat was permanently open, and thus will keep the engine cool, but won't correctly regulate the temperature. This might be a concern if you are motoring in cold water, I would imagine. The motor will run without one, but the engineers put it in there for a reason, and I would suggest you replace it.

To replace the thermostat, you need the t-stat, gasket, and the seal. The seal is a separate part, but it attaches to the t-stat. I just replaced the t-stat on my Johnson 20 HP, and I think it set me back less than $30 in parts, and most of that was the t-stat itself. The seal and gasket are less than $2 apiece. In fact, the gasket is nothing special, so before installing it I traced it out on some heavy-weight cardboard and cut myself a template so that I can just cut my own at home if I need to.

The thermostat is opened at 143 degrees F which regulates the correct operating temperature for the engine. The engine will run much cleaner with a thermostat and the life of the engine will be greatly extended.

What often happens is that water pump maintenance is deferred by opening the water circuit without the thermostat. That is a really bad idea. If the motors designers did not find that the thermostat was needed, why would they have put it there?

The Mercury/Quicksilver part 75692 is a great substitute at about half the cost of OEM.

The Sierra 18-3553 is also good: http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_355...0490526--**********.642796133--view_id.171844
