what does the timing need to be set at on a 1971 johnson 50hp, and how do you adjust the timing? Which plug is number 1? I think this might be the cause for some of my hard starting problems and draining the bat. Thanks guys

Me again kst....sounds like yer a doityourself type guy. That's great. Help yourself out and get a service manual for your engine. They are loaded with all kinds of tune up info and will show you how to set up the timing. Your hard starting problem may not just be timing. Is your sync and link (this sync's the throttle linkage with ignition timing) OK? When was the last time the engine had a good tune up? Carbs clean and fuel system tight? Get the new throttle cable! Service manuals, the generic type can be had from iboats store. Check the bottom of the page. The preferred manual is OEM. You can get a reprint from Don Cook Comp. Sorry I don't have the web address. Good Luck.

Forgot...No 1 cylinder is the top cylinder on two and three hole engines. V-4's and up, starboard top hole (right top) when looking from the rear of the engine.
