I had to replace the headgasket set very late last season, after which this motor ran great even though compression was really low across all cylinders. Each cylinder was at about 75lbs. Since it was so late in the season I didn't get a chance to take it out many times, and this spring it ran great as well the first few times I took it out. Recently the last few times taking it out, I've noticed a progressive power loss each time, and now the boat won't even get on plane. I've noticed that the compression on the top cylinder is now at 50 lbs with the other two still at 75. I'm guessing that fixing the headgasket has just caused the next weakest link to give out, and I'm wondering if there's any concensus as to what the most likely culprit is? It idles fine, but has no top end power any more. I'm not sure what it's called, but the big flat plate on the port side of a forward facing motor with all the bolts now has quite a bit of gas oil mixture seeping past the bolts which it never used to have. Could this be related? My understanding of a reed valve problem is that the motor won't idle, so if that's correct then that's not the culprit. Is there anything else that affects compression other then the reed valves and rings/cylinders? Am I looking at a bore/ring job? Are oversized rings available for this motor if that's what's wrong?
