Hi all,

New to the forums here. What a fantastic site.

I have an issue with a 65HP Johnson. Not sure of the model # (where can I locate it?).

The motor goes fine etc however it is stuck in forward. I pulled apart the control box (throttle control box) and everything looks aok in there, although there is a sealed unit that indicates forward / reverse that may be causing dramas. everything else in the control box works erg: Manual choke, electric prime etc. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Look on the transom bracket for an I.D. plate.Should have model and serial number. If no tag on transom bracket look on the engine block for a welsh plug that looks like a freeze plug for model no.
If you are not sure that shift lever is binding within the control box, disconnect the shift cable at engine and test shift lever.

Is this an electric shift engine? If so, it will stay in Forward if power fails to the shifting solenoids.

You must activate one solenoid to get to Neutral and both to get in Reverse.

Sounds wierd until you realize that you can still get home if the system breaks down.

Let us know the model number.

it is a hydro shift it may be eletrice shift if there is now power going down to the shift soliniod that may be it and also if the the pump in the gear case is bad it will not shift and if the soliniods are bad in the gear case you can here them them when you energize them you can do that at the wires comeing up from the lower unit with a jumper wire from a 12 volt sorce you can here them click if it is quiet if you here the two of them then the pump is bad the wires are on the starbord side of the motor they are green and blue

if it is cable shift and the cables move then the pump is bad and they are hard to get apart with out the snap ring plires you need to get it apart

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

The ID plate has fallen off. I had a look at the two cables that go down to the solenoid or whatever in the leg of the motor. In Neutral one wire is positive and in reverse two are positive. I think this indicates a problem in the control box (maybe wiring). Any help again is much appreciated.

Cheers

Meagain,

Try the suggestion torx gave. Test the unit but using a jumper wire to the neutral solonoid. then jump 12v to both solonoids to see if you go to neutral and reverse that way.

If you do..the problem is definately in the control box (yeay) if not it's in the LU somewhere.

The following may be of some interest to you.....

(Hydro Electric Shift)

The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear.

You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube)

In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire.
In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one.
In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear)

To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed.

This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift).

With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

hi, no one has mentioned to make sure there is oil in the lower unit --no oil then no shift
my 100hp '72 wasn't shifting the propeller shaft seal was bad and all the oil had drained out,
Larry

Thanks for that Cowfarmer. Theres oil in the leg, no dramas there. I'm sure the issue is in the controller box (probably wiring). I'll keep at it I spose
cheers
