72 Century Resorter Leaking from rubberhose covering shaft

My Resorter's rubber coupling attached to the the stern pipe fitting (in the boat interior) and attaching to the bronze shaft coupling has deteriorated resulting in water coming into the boat. Do I have to take the shaft out to insert the new rubber hose coupling? if yes, does anyone know how this is done? there are 2 bolts on the trannie that appear to lock in the shaft - do I untighten and pull the shaft out enough to insert the new rubber?

I can show pictures if required.

Thanks,

Steve

So you do not have a coupler on the prop shaft with four bolts and matching coupler on the trans output?

I have always split the couplers and tapped the shaft coupler off the shaft.

Do you have a split coupler:

I believe I have the Split coupler going to the transmission. The picture looks familiar with the 2 bolts though I am not sure if there is the set screw in the middle - I will look tonight when I get home from work.

I wrote to the President of the Century Boat Club and he responded with this memo...

yes you will have to remove the shaft unless the belt clamps (adjustment) can fix your leak.

if I understand you right you are taking about the rubber just in front of the shaft log.
if so, you would have to remove the shaft.
some shafts are offset enough to miss the rudder, check it out.
so, remove the prop - DO NOT BANG IT WITH A HAMMER - you may get away without buying a prop puller.
put a large block between a blade and boat bottom and wrench off the prop nut. the prop wrench will cost ya.
use a wood block and tap if necessary - all around and around and around. (remove the cotter pin).
disconnect the shaft from the engine coupler by loosening the set screw. watch out sometimes there is two set screws.

most times the shaft will be very hard to get out of the coupler.

If I was to do this job it would take be a whole saturday. A good marina would do it all in less than 1 hour.
If you have to buy a prop wrench and a prop puller you might as well pay a marina to do the job. If you bang up the prop or shaft, you shoulda had a marina do it.

lots of luck.

p.s. you can get that rubber most any auto shop, I think it is "heater hose" - take the old one in for comparision.
P.S.S. once you get all that apart, you might consider a new strut rubber then again maybe not. check it out for wear, it's a rubber inset that would only wear if the shaft is out of alignment. AND you might as well re-Flax the shaft log while you are at it; this might be your leak to begin with.

thanks! I got the packing coupling and hose out without taking off the prop. On investigation looks like a new coupling mounting to the engine, spline and regrooving of a notch for the spline in the shaft are in order.

Appreciate your time and feedback.
