72 Chyrsler 45 hp 455hd lower unit help!!

Hi all. I tried to take off my gear housing to reach my water pump impeller to inspect and change. I got the four bolts out and the lower unit dropped a little. there is a water line that i can loosen but cant disconnect to drop lowere unit all the way off. After a while of no luck i pushed the 2 back together and put the bolts back. Now when i spin the flywheel the propeller is not moving. can anyone assist me in my repair. If need be i can take it all apart. thanks

It doesn't sound like you have the shift shaft disconnected. Rather than going long winded, here is a link to the condensed version of the service manual. Let the page load for several seconds and then download to your computer as the link is short lived.

did you take off the leg covers and undo the shift linkage?
the LU will then drop down enough to get to the split pin on the lower linkage, undo that and the LU will drop out


edit.. obviously l'm a VERY slow typer

no i didnt take off the shift linkage. i will look into the manual for exact location. thanks guys
