Hey guys new to the board. I have a problem with my 72 evinrude 50hp. The engine has been rebuilt and everything is great but it wont stay running. It seems to run out of gas. I replaced the fuel pump. It fires right up after you prime it. it runs for about 3 mins then starts to rev and then dies. it sounds strong intill it reves then dies. if i move the throttle fast enough it will stay running. the primer bulb in line to the tank gets a little soft. I have even tried a different gas tank. still the same results. Any help would be great my wife is excited because this is the same boat she grew up on.

You might pull off the fuel line at the carb with the engine running to make sure fuel is being pumped -- suspect the fuel pump (easy rebuild) if no or little fuel coming out. If you are getting fuel, it sounds like a carburetor issue -- needle adjustment if it's been rebuilt, otherwise improper float adjustment, dirty jet, etc.

Howdy, PhatOne.

You are clearly using up the fuel in the carb and dying.

Look for air leaks or restrictions in the fuel supply to the carb.

Verify this by pumping the bulb when the engine is trying to quit.

Good luck. :)

if i pump the bulb or goto full throttle i can keep it running. The pump is new. how do i find air leaks? when i pump the bulb and the line is full of gas there are no leaks. the hose that goes to the block looks good and the hose that goes to the carb looks good. How can i tell if i am getting enough vaccume from the block to the pump to pull fuel?

Pull the fuel line from pump to carb. Turn her over and see if you get strong spurts into a bottle.

Good luck. :)

PhatOne,

The primer bulb that is in line on the fuel line should NOT go soft. What does it do when you have someone continue to squeeze this bulb while running?

it stays running if you keep squeezing. it is a brand new pump.the first line goes to carb from pump the other goes to the block below carbs... what else could it be. runns strong while it is running.,

I own a '71 Evinrude 50 horse and am having the same problem. I have changed gas tanks, adjusted the carbs, and even replaced the primer bulb think that may be the problem. A new fuel pump didn't work either. I am totally clueless as to the problem and am in search of the same info.

Splice in clear fuel line to input and output of fuel pump, air bubbles indicates that you have air leak. Check fuel pressure with guage, 3 lbs at idle. There is a plastic bushing inside the carbuator that is a bushing for the adjustable needle, if carbs have been soaked in carb cleaner they may be melted, hard to see bushing down in small passage. You use a crochet needle that is ground sharp on the end leaving the hook, reach inside passage and pull out plastic bushing with hook.
New bushing comes in kit.

I found the problem. When my brother rebuilt the engine the intake gasket covered the hole where the fuel pump plugs into the intake. i poked a hole with a drill bit(by hand). it delivers fuel now. I need to adjust idle and carbs now that i got them all out of wack.
