'72 Evinrude 65hp LU stymied by a grommet

Ok, this might sound stupid...I'm trying to remove the LU. I've got all the bolts removed. The only thing stopping me for now is a grommet where the shift wiring goes into the exhaust cover. I've managed to pull it out about an inch, but I don't know if I'm pulling the grommet over the wiring or pulling the wiring too. I don't want to yank too hard and beak the wiring.

Any tricks to getting the grommet off? It almost looks like it's part of the wiring insulation. I'm tempted to just cut it off with a utlity knife but one slip and I cut the wire.

it is molded into the wiring harness, and has to go down with the wire, tie a string to wire to pull it back up. then reseat the grommet, or exhaust will enter the cowling and foul the motor.
