Sorry for such a basic topic but I’m unsure of myself, as this is the first outboard I’ve owned. I bought a new fuel tank and a new Evinrude/Johnson fuel line and primer bulb set but can’t get fuel to the fuel pump apparently.

I removed the line that goes to the intake on the fuel pump from the old fitting on the motor and a little gas did come out of the old old fitting upon squeezing the bulb. Re-hooked the line and continued squeezing the bulb but could not get fuel to make it up the line to where it goes into the fuel pump. While this line was off I did blow into it and it was clear so I’m a little confused.

Guy I bought it from assures me that it was in great running order as recently as last fall. Probably a silly question but should you be able to pump gas through the system with the bulb and observe it coming out at any point you choose to remove the line ? Thanks !

The bulb is a manual fuel pump.------It pulls fuel from the tank and puts fuel right through the motor pump to fill the carburetor.----Arrow on the bulb indicates fuel flow towards the motor.

Good morning racerone and thank you for that confirmation. If squeezing the bulb with the fuel input line to the fuel pump disconnected doesn’t cause fuel to exit that line, then I guess I can assume an occluded line or a bad male connector on the motor. Strange though since I was able to get fuel to exit that fitting with its line off and the line going to the pump from that fitting didn’t seem occluded when removed and blown into.

Assuming a non pressurized system, roughly how many squeezes are we talking about here to get the system primed ? 5, 10, 50? Thanks again...not all heroes wear capes and there’s a bunch of you on this forum !!

Remove fuel line from motor and press in the end of the connector, then squeeze the bulb. Fuel should squirt out. If it does, but fuel isn't getting to the pump, then the line from the connector to the pump is the culprit. Replace that line. (it looks original)

Thanks, Is this a nominal amount of fuel that should exit that fitting on the motor ?

Use the old tank, line and primer bulb with some fresh gas and 50:1 mix. Make sure the vent screw is open. Use a 30 gal trash can with water about half way up the motor leg, and test run at idle. Once you find everything is working, you can take another look at the new tank and lines. Compare fuel flow on the old system to the new -- might use the old line and bulb with the new tank, or the old tank with the new line (etc.) Assuming the old system works, I would suspect a venting issue with the new tank or a problem with the new primer bulb.

Per your video, that sure is a skinny squirt. I would expect it to urp out with a short gush.

You nailed it FR. It was the Fuel line fitting on the motor. Squirted carb cleaner in it and it’s gushing. Engine primed and started...ran great.

A note for anyone trying to start one of these for the first time: This one doesn’t like to be choked...floods easily. Starts every time if you turn off the choke and and give it some gas using the throttle handle while pulling the cord.

Many thanks to all who responded. I noticed that there is no exhaust water coming out of what I assume is the exhaust ejection port pictured below...can anyone confirm ? Probably need to inspect/change impeller.

Nowhere near enough water in that bucket. Fill it up so the big bulge is submerged and see what happens
