hey all
i bought a 72 johnson 20hp s.s. manual start yesterday to use for parts for my 72 25hp johnson. the guy said it was "seized." well, i took it over to my buddies house and he said we should try to see if we could fix it before tering it down for parts. it seemed to turn over freely, but tight. we sprayed some lubricant into the cylinders, some carb cleaner in the carb, put in fresh plugs (lots of spark) and new gas 50:1. after pulling about 100 times (sometimes easy, sometimes very tough) it fired. another 10 pulls and it was running, but only on full choke. after about 20mins it would run with no choke, BUT, when it dies it is VERY difficult to pull unless you wait about a minute. then it frees up again and starts right away. the water coming out feels pretty hot while running. so, i was thinking that there is something seized inside, or maybe the thermostat is stuck closed, so that it overheats and seizes temporarily? any help would be appreciated. also, do you think i should take it to the river and runs the heck out of it?
LM
