Bought a boat that had a 72 johnson 25 hp but p/o had jumped the solenoid and it ran good... he had some switch in the positive battery cable which was pretty much burnt up... I even fired it up again with his switch... I pulled the factory wiring plug and got a new solenoid wired it up with push button and kill switch like shown but I'm getting no spark... the starter works... I originally forgot to add the wire from the neutral safety but still nothing... not sure if it's bad though and not really wanting to throw parts at it so may try checking it... hoping to get a flywheel puller soon... appreciate the responses

Try disconnecting the stop button, making sure nothing remains connected to the magneto. If it has spark now, recheck your work. Still no spark?? Something else is wrong. Sheared flywheel key???

Pretty sure I tried connecting both magneto leads together and still no spark but will try it again next time...

need and OMC/BRP or aftermarket outboard solenoid -- not an auto solenoid. Connecting the magneto kill wires would prevent spark, btw (that's how it works through the kill switch).

It's an omc solenoid... I have the magneto wires ran through a toggle switch if that makes any difference... so would I'd leave the two magneto leads unhooked???

Putting the wee black / magneto wires together stops the sparking.

The kill switch stops the spark by electrically connecting the two wires together. So...indeed if you connect them together, you will have no spark.

Like I said I had I wired exactly like the picture above and it looked just like the YouTube video of a 72 rude but wasn't getting spark so I believe I tried connecting both magneto leads but didn't try with them disconnected.. only thing I did differently from the video was I left the connectors on both wires coming from magneto... gonna try with the magneto wires disconnected and check the neutral safety... how far should that switch be pushed in???

The neutral safety has to do with the starter motor operation.----The neutral safety has nothing to do with spark.

Gotcha... I know the one connector I looked into had a bit of oil in it from being tucked in so maybe I'll just cut them out when I check if it sparks with them not connected

This could be made to work, maybe with the connectors you might have: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Johnson-Ev...029425&hash=item2cdbc25bd3:g:zx8AAOSwMHpbpRDq Anyway, it's what a stop switch looks like. (Alternatively, you could wire in a man-overboard switch -- kind with a clip and lanyard.)

Wires must be completely isolated unless the circuit is completed when the button is depressed. I doubt that oil or grease is an issue, but if there was contact somewhere in the pan, that would be a problem. If you want to work on a stop switch later, just tape off the ends from the magneto. I'm not sure how you would have wired a toggle switch, but sounds like the circuit was complete somewhere, shutting down spark.

My toggle had the terminals on back that I had to hook up while the video had a toggle with two wires already hooked up at factory so thinking that could be my prob... I got another push button that I can try... appreciate the help
