I've had the 1972 Johnson 65 for about 4 years. was running fine until few weeks ago. runs on ears, but when you put it in the water, it dies. Carbs rebuilt at the beginning of seaon.

checked on muffs:
good spark to all 3 plugs
compression, #1-134, #2 135, #3 135
Rectifier tested good
Charge coil tested good

visual check:
of ignition coils revealed #2 and #3 both have a crack in them.
of Stator reveal brown sticky goo.

last thing I was able to test is the Sensor Coil. On the low ohms test all sensor leads tested 8.6 ohms which is within spec. When I did the Hi ohms test i got "0" on all 3 leads.

All of this let's me know that I need to replace the following:
1. Timer base/sensor coil
2. Stator
3. #2 and #3 coil

Crazy thing is that it runs great on the muffs. And the actual motor is in great great.

My questions are:
1. would it still run good on muffs with a bad timing base/Sensor coil?
2. Any thing else I could check to verify the timing base/sensor coil is bad?

Thanks.
