I'm new to the power boating world and need some advice. I just bought a "72" 15.5' Invader, Stallion Tri-Hull with a ?"72"? 70hp Johnson hanging off the back. I ran it for about 5 min.(with water intake hookup) before buying and it seemed to run well. The engine was serviced last fall and has set over the winter. There was quite a bit of bluish exaust while running. Is this normal?? What should I look for when I finaly run it for an extended period the first time? Any big problem areas for this year/size that I should keep my eyes open for? Can anyone tell me the aprox. speed I should expect out of this set up? Any help appreciated. If repairs needed is o.k. as paid only $800 for boat, trailer, motor and elec. trolling motor-all in good condition.

Welcome to the board!! Blue exhaust is normal. Your fuel/oil ratio should be at 50:1 (one pint of quality TCW-3 two stroke oil to 6 gallons of gas). When you run it you should be able to touch the engine naer the spark plug and hold your hand there for a count to five. You might want to inquire if the impellar was changed last year. Good policy is at least every 2-3 years chenge them. Speed? Well that is tough to judge unless you have a tachometer and GPS. At a guess w/o knowing the weight and prop about 25-27 mph.

Bob :D

Thanks alot. Is 25-27 mph fast enough to ski behind? I know Im showing my ignorance but Ive been into sail boats (you know "wind faries")for the last 10 years and dont know much about power boating...

As long as you aren't carrying 4 big adults in the boat at the same time, you should have no problem skiing behind this boat. I've known people with similar sized boats/outboards who have used them for skiing quite well. As far as that engine goes, I've got a 1971 100 hp Johnson which is (and has been) wonderful. If it is an electric shift, they can be a little frustrating if they become trouble prone but I wouldn't call that a deal breaker. There are lots of other folks on this board with similar engines that can help you should you need it.

Good luck,
Jim
