Hello,

I have an opportunity to buy a genuine '68 Mercury tachometer complete with plug in (to the controller). The Tach has a range from 0-60 on the face. I have a 72 Merc 3cyl 65hp Thunderbolt and was wondering if purchased, could I just plug this into my controller, hook up the ground and expect it to work properly?

How does a tach recognize the difference between a 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 cyl motor or does it make no difference. I do not want to buy this and find out later that a 3 cyl motor needs a specific tach.

Thanks for any help with this situation.

Re: 72 Merc 65 hp tachometer question

Don't know which p/n you are looking at but the original one for your engine is still available:

Here is the parts list for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/454.cfm

Under MISCELLANEOUS PARTS/ACCESSORIES see Tachometer P/N 79-73370A3

Here is one for sale:

79-73370A3 TACHOMETER ASSEMBLY (MERC 650E-5-SS) $64.05 in stock

From here:

http://www.marinepowerservice.com/B...8/requesttimeout/3000/Doc_Part_nbr/ 48822.cfm

Maybe the one you are looking at is the same p/n.

Re: 72 Merc 65 hp tachometer question

Thank you Gerry, I will pass on the tach I saw on e-bay and contact the folks at Crowley. There is nothing worse than getting an electrical component off of e-bay that may or may not work (no matter how cheap it is).
