72 Merc 650 shifting question

Hello,

I needed to replace the lower unit for my Merc 65 hp and had a couple questions about how it shifts. Of course, the guy I bought it from and I had a heck of a time getting it mated to the powerhead. After @ an hour we got it boulted down and I began testing it a few days later.

It shifts beautifully from neu to foward but from neu to reverse, it does not seem to engage until the shifter is way down and the RPM's start to go up. I messed around with the shifter adjustment but could not seem to get it to shift right.

Should I keep messing with the shifter adjustments or worse, could I have a bad LU with a bad rev gear? Is it possible we may not have installed the LU correctly and if that is the case, I would try reinstalling it again. The other thing I will add is there seems to be a lot of shifter control distance between the Neu to For and neu to rev. Much more distance that I had with the older LU.

Any advice and help is always appreciated!!

sounds like you need to adjust the barrel on the cable. I would set the shifter in neutral remove the barrel from the nylon swing clip, set the shifter arm so that neutral is centered, then adjust the barrel so that it lines up with the barrel cup, then reinsert the barel into the cup lock the swing clip and retest the throttle

Thank you Lt. I can give that a try. The motor is in my garage on a stand. Another question if you don't mind, when I lost my LU I killed my prop. Would it hurt anything if I did these adjustments w/o a prop on the LU? Or would you reccomend I get a prop to put on the LU so that the LU has some resistance (in a testing tank)?

Confirm the unit is installed correctly buy disconnect the cable from the shifter slide and manually shift the unit into fowards the prop shaft will ratchet in one direction and lock in the other. In neutral it will spin freely in both directions and in reverse it will lock in both directions If this is what you have then it should be properly installed
