72' Mercontrols

I have recently purchased a boat which has a 72' 65 hp motor and mercontrols. Can anyone help me to properly start my motor with the controls? The Mercontrol is mounted to the drivers side of the boat. The Mercontrol has two levers on it. 1) on the inside of the control consul, which is smaller and shorter than the other. 2) The second lever is taller and is closer to the driver of the boat.
I am guessing that the taller lever closer to the driver is the foward/neutral/reverse lever and the smaller lever to the inside of the consul is the choke?
Can anyone direct me on the best way to choke, start, and how long to let my motor warm up before using?

Just not sure how much choke to put on, how long to leave the choke on for, should I start in neutral?

Thanks

# 1 do not start, or even turn the engine over with out a water source, either ear muffs on a hose, or in the water.

the tall lever is the forward neutral reverse, and also the throttle, the further you push it the faster. the little lever is the start warm up lever. you pull it all the way up when starting and as the engine settles you push it down. there should be a button under it near the key. this is the choke button i'm use to the larger inline mercs, but the principle is the same for starting.

connect fuel line, pump bulb till hard, raise warm up lever, hold choke button, turn key. try to start about 3 times, repump the bulb, then repeat. it should start, leave the warm up lever up, and you may have to puch the choke a couple of times till the engine warms and settles in. then lower warm lever.

make sure the engine is peeing on the left side when looking at the engine. no pee no go. you'll burn the engine up.

when trying to start turn the engine over at the most 5 times, got just keep cranking. you will burn up the starter.

Thanks!

I have just got done replacing the floor in the boat and I am going to start getting the motor ready for water.

Any suggestions, to a non-mechanic, on ways to prep my 72' 65hp merc for the season?

hey if you are trying to start and run your motor with muffs on only let motor idle do not rev with throttle i read in the merc book that reving with throttle will damage the motor..
good luck..
