So i have been havin issues with my starter, well what i believe is my starter it was brand new, and it was working fine for a while than one day i was out on the water and i went to go turn the key over and i just heard a click, ended up getting pulled back to the landing and when i went to go work on it the next day it just worked, and then i would turn it off and then i would just get a click.

But my question is, how interchangeable are the starters for this engine throughout the years like would a 86 year engine starter be fine on a 72 year engine? I see a lot of starters online that are cheaper, its an old boat and i don't wanna keep throwing money into it when i could have a more inexpensive solution.

^^^ Agree,,, it might not be the starter. I had to replace the slave solenoid on my boat for the exact scenario you are describing.

(You still need to troubleshoot the problem, to make sure which part is bad.)

yeah im at a loss on whats wrong i went through what was posted above to check and see whats wrong, and according to that the solenoid is good, and so is the starter. light turns on when it should.

Also im looking at all these starters im finding online, can i use a newer year starter on this old of a boat is there any harm in it or anything that can go wrong if there is a slight variation?

And to add to another point, and a bump to this topic cause im really looking for a solution to this, when i bypassed the slave solenoid connecting the two wires (two yellow wires) it didnt do anything not even a click.
