72 model 200 mercury 20hp needs lower end

I have found two... one for $200. seller says the lower unit gears are ok, has been looked at..but would be best to put in a new seal kit?? not sure if I could do that or not.. skills level for me is routine maintenance. Says the impeller is new. How difficult is a lower unit seal kit to install??

another one is $300 and says it has been "gone thru" and is fine. ebay marine sellers..

seems like these are high.. Ive seen the whole engine for sale for $350 or around that ran well. My was a gift from a friend and he said it is rebuilt..Thanks for responding.

I've seen a couple lately on eBay sold by private sellers going for $100-125 ... I'd go to the trouble and cost of putting a seal kit in one of those

However for $200-300 if it leaked it would be going back for a full refund .....

BTW, what is wrong with your original one? Mine has a piece broken off the cavitation plate, it doesn't really affect the operation that I can see since I also have a 'whale tail' on it but I would like to get a housing at a reasonable price and take the guts from this one and a new seal kit and rebuild it this winter

The original lower unit on this one was "misplaced" by the shop and was never returned. I received the powerhead from a friend that died. Ive had this power head on a stand in my garage for 7 years and it has never been run. I have a 9.5 sportwin on a 14 foot fishing boat and this 20hp would be a great replacement. I've never done a lower seal kit before, sounds like alot of work if the gears have to come out.

I went from a '85 Force 15HP to a '76 Merc 200 on a 14 ft flatbottom and essentially doubled my speed so I'm sure you'll see a noticeable difference
