i have a question for any guru's out there. Last year i bought a 72 starcraft nova in good shape from what i know(first boat purchase) i think its original but no knowledge on that either, i thought about selling it to get a newer bigger boat(19') open bow. on the Nova the reverse doesnt work but everything else is in working order. i dont boat that often due to other summer toys,i thought about getting reverse fixed but dont want to dump anymore money in it cause i put $400(i know its not alot) to try to fix at boat mechanic, replaced shift cable which didnt do the trick and replaced lower unit oil which failed also. the guy who has worked on johnsons forever said the solenoid might be bad or the blocking diod.(both cost money) My question is does anyone have a idea what they would sell this boat for? im torn between keeping it and possibly fixing or dealing with no reverse or just selling it as is. appreciate any feedback that your able to give. thank you.

Re: 72 nova

I would likely throw it up on CL for $1500-$2000 assuming the engine runs well, and works in forward. Not having a reverse is a fair drawback but I would not think a show stopping one.

Clean -nice boat I would just fix the moter the selectric shift could be a problemand a lot of bad notes on them. I have had three with no problems and one I had to repair go to the Motor section for good advise. Motor repair is cheaper than a new boat or look for a doner boat with a motor.

nice boat I would fix the motor. Unless your set on a larger one . If so then sell it as is a Doner boat with a good motor might be a quick answer. Go to the Motor selection and seek there advise.

Re: 72 nova

i have alittile over $2500 in with boat purchase. engine runs fine, reverse only problem. i jumped on the purchase to have a boat at the cottage off lake huron for july 4th weekend, we have had a 16' with a 25hp on there growing up but sold it over 10 years ago, hated looking at the water with nothing to ride on it. bought it thinking i can get off the dock with the hoist we have for the old boat but no go. i figured if i cant get off hoist and have to take to marina then i think i want to get a slightly bigger boat for that lake. my main concern is the reliabilty of the johnson and being that old and getting caught on the lake with a breakdown which i know can happen to any boat. i would like to get something that holds at least 6-8. buddy of mine mentioned he wanted it few months ago but will see. just wanted to get thougths from some guys with knowledge. i appreciate the feed back. thanks

JASOUTSIDE, i will sell you the over the neck orange life jacket(very rare) for $50. :)

Horsecollar life jacket for $50 you say? HA! You must take me for some average joe schmuck negotiator! I'll give you $47.50 and not a penny more! Oh all right, $48.

Well, I think you'll have a tough time getting what you have into it for our neck of the wood. I'd bet you could sell it pretty quick for $1500. The right guy may come along and give ya $2000 for it. Maybe I'm all wet though.

It's a unique boat, a beauty to be sure! But it'll take just the right captain to really appreciate it.:)

If my life supervisor ever allowed me to I'd love a little ski boat like that!

(OK, $49 for the life jacket)

What type of oil did you put in the lower unit. Electric shift models require a different oil or they won't work properly. Type C is what they need.

Re: 72 nova

i used the type C. another member last year mentioned that changing it might fix reverse but it didnt. as of right now boat is sold. i will let buddy worry about reverse, he knows about it, its only 16' so not having reverse is not end of world but nice to have. thanks for trying to troubleshoot though.

If you want to drive Ill take two big ones and your boat for my 22 Holiday. Its in prestine condition with lots of power or, just fly out and buy the 87 conv. Van with it The van only has 55 K miles and all new tires and fims. Its listed on Wa State Skagit Co. Boats. Actually you have a very nice boat there and blessed with a skiled wife to sew it and interested enough to do it. Enjoy
