I have a 72 Rude 100hp V4 stuck in forward. Was idling it the other day then all of a sudden, the prop was rotating like it was engaged. Then noticed a little smoke coming out of the Remote Control. Does this sound like its more of a problem with the switch in the remote control rather than a problem in the lower unit?
Thanks

Most electric component's are damaged if you let the smoke out, I would check the control box. You can also run a jumper wire from positive to the blue, green wire's at the engine where they go to the gearcase.

I tried troubleshooting the switch per the manual, found a problem there. Then tried running 12V to the leads at the motor and that wouldnt shift it either. Then because i have bad luck i guess, i couldnt shut the engine off. One problem leads to another with this beast. How difficult is it to repair the shift solenoids in the gearcase?

Take a ohm's reading on the blue, green wire's to the solinoid's, they should read about eight ohm,s as I recall. Also take a ohm's reading on each wire to grond to check, and see that these lead's are not shorted. If you have to drop the gearcase, the solinoid''s are under a metal cover at the front of the case. Did you have the engine running when you jumped the lead's at the engine? This engine must be running to shift. It is shifted by hydraulic pressure.

On the Shift Solenoid leads, got 6 ohms on Blue to Ground and .3 ohms from Green to Ground, 6.3 ohms from Green to Blue. Problem with the Neutral Solenoid i would think? I also checked the Shift Diode per the service manual and found that it may be open.

I'm sorry I gave you the wrong information on checking for ground, the sloinoid body is ground. You do have a problem with that .3 ohm reading, but that could be a grounded wire before the solinoid.
