I've had some starting problems in the past and after doing some testing, I've come to the determination that I need to replace my key switch. So to replace the switch, I need to take the throttle body / gear shift housing (what is this really called?) to get to the switch. I've taken out every bolt and screw that I can but I still can't get the body to separate. Before I break something (again) I thought I would ask someone first. By the way, I can't find anything about how to do this in my manual for some reason.

Thanks again for your help!

mind you I am not looking over your shoulder... a picture of the shifter/throttle box would be useful.... several would be great from multiple angles...
part of the reason you may not have gotten an answer is there are alot of different boxes out there.... made by several companies and each company modified or updated their offering as time went, as well as often offering several options. What I can tell you without a picture is be careful, go slowly, take pictures... take more pictures... make notes... draw diagrams... because when you do get it open there cams springs....sometimes detent balls.... and wires all in there. I am sure that I don't need to point it out... but if you get things backwards... or wrong you will not be happy. If you have for sure removed every screw/bolt/fastener it is often worthwhile to check under the decals as well for possible hidden screws. Then consider that there may very well be a bit of corrosion, stickem... or deposits that hold the parts together... suggest that when you get it apart you relubricate all the parts that obviously were lubricated....these should be obvious due to the dry, or wet lubricant on them. If you have any trepidations I would suggest you post pics and ask then wait for answers.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1973/115393M 1973/REMOTE CONTROL/parts.html

Don't know if you have this parts diagram or not but here it is, assuming you have the correct original factory remote control box.

I also have the factory service manual for my 1974 115HP Johnson which should be the same control box I assume.

Instead of me typing the whole dissambly procedure, maybe you can tell me more of what your problem is from the diagram.

Be more than happy to help if I can.

I have a similar engine I'm working on. My box might be the same as yours. What might be holding you up is the two bolts on the back side of the box. You might want to take it off or loosen it from the boat. The other bolts i thought where pretty obvious. They are facing the inside of the boat.
Just take your time looking for all the bolts that are on there you may need to tap the lower part of the box with the back of the screwdriver lightly to break up any corrosion that might be locking it in.

Good luck.

Re: '73 115 Evinrude - How to Open Control box to replace key switch?

Just took mine apart yesterday (73 65 horse but same box) the bolts that held mine to console (C.C.) went through control so had to be removed from console then removing screws from outside of control box removed lower cover allowing access to cables upper part of box was held together by the screw that holds the warm up lever on and the one that holds on the shifter. after these were removed had to gently pry around cover to separate I took a few pics along the way but not of the screws etc Hope this helps

Thank you for posting your pics! It definitely looks like mine. So when you removed the control arm and the warm up lever, you were able to separate the box by prying it apart, correct? That's where I'm stuck, I've removed everything that I can see and I've tried using some force but it just isn't coming apart. I can always apply more but I wanted to be sure there wasn't a trick to it. Attached are my pictures.

I'll take another look and apply more force if I have to and see what happens. Thanks.

Yep, turned out to be corrosion that was holding it together and causing the problems. Since this has been in salt water, I guess that's just what I'm going to have to deal with.

Thanks.
