I got this motor cheap . And don't wanna dump hundreds in it . Motor is std bore never been touched ,I have 4 new std bore pistons . All cylinders except for one are nice and smooth . One has some scratching that can be felt , would a good hone job be good enough ? I'm thinking still would have plenty of compression but maybe slightly lower then rest. Had very hard job finding any pistons at all for this motor . Not looking to make it new just run . Ohh and problem was it started detonation and messed up tops of pistons . Same scratched cylinder has slight aluminum buildup ,which some acid should clean up easy . Cylinders are .002 out of round not much . So any opinions on hone and std pistons.

.003 is the limit and then it needs bored. Remove the aluminum transfer with some toliet bowl cleaner and the see what damage you have, it scratches will catch your fingernail a hone wont fix.

I didn't think hone would remove them all but be a lot better then it already is . It ran fine . Little bit hard start . Can't find any pistons oversize for this motor . 73 only year that fits . I got the 4 std ones I found . Honed , new pistons and erring gotta be better then way it is now . Tops of 3 pistons really bad .

Agreed the 73 model year is a one off year.---No other years internal parts fit.----No location given , but O/S may be available depending on where you are.---------Have a 73 block with O/S pistons installed and 0 hrs on it.

How much ? I'm on a 500 dollar budget . Direct from the wife ! Pistons and machine work would be that . I found some NOS std pistons 80 bucks each . That's why didn't really wanna bore . But if can get right price would be best .

Re: 73 135 rebuild

There are tons of original (new-in the box) pistons left over at various US Evinrude dealers. Give this guy a call, he has 5 new ones in stock: BILL'S MARINE SERVICE, 20721 GARRETT HIGHWAY, OAKLAND, MD, 21550 phone: (301) 387-5536
Ask for part number: 385477, the original factory part number-standard size. This guy also has 5 new ones: SCHERMERHORN HARBOR LLC, 71 SCHERMERHORN LANDING RD, HAMMOND, NY, 13646 Phone: (315) 324-5966

Your engine will probably make good compression and run with a deep vertical scratch on the side of a cyl wall. What will happen is that exhaust gas/carbon will be forced down that groove every combustion cycle. Over time, that event will eventually deposit carbon around that area of the ring and down along the skirt of the piston. After many hours of running, it will eventually shorten the life of the overhaul. I've done a personal overhaul (on a well worn 76 135) with this situation and the carbon buildup is usually a long-term thing-measured in years.

Thank you , yes I did find my pistons from Bills Marine. Called many places till I found them . Does anyone no if a gasket set is different for this year like the pistons?

Bombardier does make a special powerhead gasket kit. Sold under part number: 388602. [1973-77 115/135/140] Includes the two head gaskets, but does not include the two carb overhaul gasket sets (sold separately)

Re: 73 135 rebuild

Honed out first cylinder today ,came out very nice . Got some aluminum buildup to remove on a couple cylinders , then start putting back together. Couple questions, how should sealing rings be . Offset or up top. Also what's a good homemade piston holder to change over pistons . Any advice on best way .

Re: 73 135 rebuild

A small amount of muratic acid will dissolve the aluminum that has transferred to the side of the cast iron cyl walls. Then re-hone. I fit the pistons/rings into each cyl by hand. Make sure you have the rods facing the correct way up.

What compression readings did you get?
Any play in that flywheel?

Haven't taken compression since rebuild. Flywheel tight

Itd be interesting to know how the honed cylinders compares to the others.

The reason why i asked about the flywheel as after 12secs theres a rattle that turns up, probably nothing to be concerned about but i thought it sounded a bit bearingish

Compression is 130 on all 4 , did find hard start when stone cold. Choke is working , checking fuel pump now.

Re: 73 135 rebuild

Your compression should come up somewhat, once the rings seat.

Re: 73 135 rebuild

With that high o compression I can see why need good octane fuel. Fuel pump looks all good, gonna put back on and try again today .On the hose it is running great ,going to back in water and check timing .

Re: 73 135 rebuild

If you plan on running it at stock/factory timing, you'll need to be running at least 92 octane. These early 135's had some of the tightest (highest compression) heads in the crossflow lineup.
