There's got to be someone with the dimension or the gauge to rent or sell for setting the shims to get the pinion gear insertion on a driveshaft for the motor listed.

I have read questions and answers on here about people rebuilding their lower units specifically johnson/evinrude. How did you set yours, if not with the gauge or dimension. I've tried the local shops and they are little help. It's not in the factory manual which I have.
Thanks

Well sray, what you would pay for the special tools to set shim, you'd be better off just paying the local shop to set it for you. The shimming tool is really expensive. Have you talked to the local shop about doing it for you? It don't take long to do.

Yes I have discussed setting the shims with one shop that said they wouldn't touch it since I had rebuilt it and the other shop sets the shims by feel. Do you think setting them by feel is an appropriate way of doing it? If it is then they'll do it, if not I'm out of luck. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

its impossible to set the shims by feel on that motor. you may gues and get lucky but odds are you wont. does your unit use a tapered upper bearing or a flat torrinton bearing?
