i think it should be as you said, just make sure the tube going up to the engine goes back into the pump housing, and it may be a good time to have a look at the grommet that seals that line to the pump.

This was well explained in my OEM manual....(I got mine on eBay for $20- delivered)....and in a number of posts in here. i have a '75 so it should be similar, but i am not positive.

You need to avoid damaging anything when removing the drive shaft....there is a spring pin that has to be lined up with a slot in a plate.
The lower unit will drop 1/2-3/4 " and give access to the shift rod coupler which has to be dx'd to drop L/U completely.

If you can't or won't get a manual, a search in here will bring up all the info you need.

yeah I do have a manual coming, but I've worked on a few motors before. Sometimes just so eager to jump in and do stuff. Thanks for the info

If you go back to the start of this Johnson/Evinrude section & click onto FAQ, down near the bottom is a link to 9.9/15hp repairs. There, I also have a 6hp article there.

There is another trick on those motors as there is a cross pin in the upper driveshaft that slides thru a matching hole in the lower seal area that this cross pin puts tension on the seal, pushing it UP to allow the seal to function when the motor is running.

To remove the driveshaft/lower unit after the shifting coupler bolt is removed, you will probably need to rotate the driveshaft enough to allow the cross pin to drop down.
