The brown wire is the tach signal wire. Connect it to either of the yellow AC stator wires.

Copy that. That explains the extra brown wire under the dash! I tested it with the ohm meter and confirmed.

The rectifier is hooked up as described by Dave (with grounding wire)... and still... no tach. How would I test to see if the stator is good or bad?

I'm curious as to what make/model of tach are you installing? Some Mercury specific tachs only got the signal from the switchbox. They won't work by connecting directly to one of the wires off of the stator.

Ok! You got me on this one. I bought it off of ebay June of 2006. It was described as "Marine Tachometer Gauge - Tach Gauge Boat New". $43 = shipping. The markings on the side of the gauge is "CE 27289" with "211/96/c" under it. Attached is a pic of the front of it. It has a logo on the bottom of the face that I do not recognize. On the back, it has the two mounting bolts, light bulb socket & light hook up, and four bolts for the following attachments: Ground, Ignition, Send (Alternator) & I/E (for Johnson & Evinrude brands only). It also has a selector dial for 4 pole, 6 pole, 10 pole & 12 pole. I have hooked the ground, ignition and (recently) brown signal wires to the switch. I/E is blank since this is a Merc. The light is hooked to my marker light switch and it is bolted to my dashboard.

It illuminates appropriately. When the ignition is on, the needed returns to 0, usually a very short distance from where it might be (as demonstrated in the pic).

Set it to 12 Pole and make sure the brown wire is going to the rectifier where one of the AC wires from the stator is connected. If the brown wire is still going to the switchbox on the motor, just disconnect it and move it to the rectifier. See if you get a tach reading.

12 pole is set. The brown wire comes from the internal wiring harness and attaches to one of the ac (~) legs on the rectifier, where one of the wires attaches to from the stator. The other wire from the stator is going to the other ac or (~) leg. The ground from the cowl is going to the Neg (-) leg and a positive lead from the wiring harness is feeding the pos (+) leg of the rectifier. All of this = no reading on the tach. That, my friends, is the problem I face.

FYI... I am going to be transporting this boat and motor to the great Clams Canino next thursday for some tweaking. It is a 2 and a half hour drive for me, but by what I hear about this guy, it is worth every mile. He has very strongly suggested that I have a tach on it before I bring it up. But if I can't, then I can't. But atleast you know what I am doing this for...

Wayne will get it running for you (the tach and the motor) Something is amiss, from what you describe it is currently hooked up correctly.

Wayne is expecting you, he knows the tach is not working, don,t sweat it.:)

Yes. He is expecting me. If he dosn't know about the tach, he will on thursday.

I have a strange suspicion that my stator is gone... fried... cooked... crispy... no bueno! Don't know if this is possible or what other problems this would present but it's all I can think of.

I hope to just have to link and sync but it very well may be more than just that. That's is why I have tried to fix everything else in the mean time before I get there. i.e new fuel lines, fuel filter, new fuel connector, new recitifer, new wires that appear to be less than safe, new wiring harness, new switch, new rotary steering system including steering cable. That's saying nothing about the trailer. i.e. new axel, galvanized hubs, bearing buddies, 2 tires + spare, refinnished the wheels and leaf springs. Oh and new bunks. I should be able to make it up there and back.

The only thing that a bum stator on that motor would do is not charge the battery.....and not trigger the tach.

Is it possible to have a stator "rebuilt" or re-wrapped if it is indeed bad?

Not really and it is a very unsophisticated stator, its really just an alternator. Nothing in it controls engine operation. As such they are relatively inexpensive, I would not be surprised if Wayne had one.

Re: '73 Merc 1150 RPM Gauge

Update! The two hour drive each way was deffinitely worth it. I took my tower to Clams today. It runs awesome now. We was great with it.

The tach.... The stator seems to be good. The signal is good to the dash board. The tach seems to be a bit faulty (i.e. not working). I have spent more for less (speaking of the $43 tach from ebay) but I guess i'll be getting another one.

Now I just have to figure out where my leak is in the boat. We took on a gallon or two during a 10 minute test ride. Not good.

I heard this from others and now from Clams... "A boat is a hole in the water in which one pours money" But it's so much fun!

Anyways, I would deffinitley recommend Wayne for any Merc. outboard repair. He is indeed the "tower of power" legend! If you live in driving distance and you have one of the older machines that isn't preforming just right... hitch up and drive on down to Lake Hartwell South Carolina. You won't regret it. - Nathan
