73 Merc 65 hp battery hook up help

Just purchased this motor and forgot where PO told me to hook up battery. Ive searched around and ive seen that this should be hooked up to the harness?? The harness is untouched in great condition, so no body has modified it. It seems odd that you would just hook the power straight up to the starter, or selinoid for that matter. Manual is in the mail, and online stuff is much newer than my motor. Any help would be greatly appriciated!!

+ battery cable goes to the starter solenoid The big terminal that does not have a cable to the starter. The - battery cable goes to the engine block.

Seems barbaric, but that is the way it is.

The + batt wires are red in color and the - are black. If you don't know what the starter solenoid is, go to the starter....big black round thing on the right (looking forward...starboard) side of the engine, mounted vertically with this toothed thing (Bendix...like on a car's starter) mounted on a shaft on top of it that connects to gears on top of the engine...flywheel.

Off the side of the starter is a large 3/8 ish" diameter red insulated wire that goes to a terminal on a plastic "hootus" of about 2" in diameter and 1" high. The nut locking it on the terminal of this hootus is about 9/16" wrench size.

On top of this hootus, and on the other side of it is another large terminal with the same sized nut. This other terminal is where the + side of the battery connects and where it powers all the electronics in the engine. No fuses engine to battery.

Im trying to find this "hootus" you are referring to, heres a pic so you can see what I see. I cant find any 9/16 nuts... Actually never heard of a hootus...

On your motor, the starter solenoid is mounted on the side of the front cowling support. It is in your picture #2 in your first post, on the top. Trace the yellow battery cable from the starter base to the solenoid.
