Re: 73 Reinell Rebuild

Well just an update I ordered the paint and a gel coat patch kit after i finish painting I am going to build the boat a padded cradle on top of it so it know it will be supported properly when we tip it back over. Lucky for me the empty hull is very thick and strong that's the only reason I was able to put it in the water to check for leaks. Next on the priority list is buy resin and glass, but for now I have some more grinding to do. I will post some updates when the painting gets started. Painting has to be first in my case due to dust and weather glassing can be done inside and painting cant. It will be a delicate job moving it around after that.

Looking good. Remember to measure everything you can. You'll be surprised at how some of the lines will start to disappear when your grinding down the hull. You might go ahead and get at least some of your wood and let it dry out while you're painting.
I read that someone suggested 8" stringers. If you remember I have the same boat, one year later model, and the stringers were originally 2 x 6's. I believe they were 5 1/2 " at the tallest part. Our boats aren't identical, but I bet they're pretty close.
Did you find a West coast source for glass and resin?

Yes I will be going through tap plastics because I can pick it up instead of paying for shipping. And I will go trough uscomposits for the glass but Im still very unsure of what type of glass to use for the transom and stringers and what grade of resin. And then I got stuck on what to use to replace those flat hull supprts that were below the stringers. It was hundreds of wood squares all puzzled together I don't have a clue what to do about those. :( hear are some pics. And there is two more that are smaller on either side of this big one. 065.jpg051.jpg

Re: 73 Reinell Rebuild

On another note Im picking up my paint tomorrow and I really want to get started, However... there are areas on the bottom I don't know how to heal. Do I need to replace the gel coat where it missing before I paint or can sand it down an paint right over the exposed resin? Also there is a few very small areas where the resin is chipped away to exposed glass fibers. Can I just use some bondo glass or resin from the hardware store to fill it in? They are smaller than a dime and I plan on reinforcing all sharp angles with glass tape or roving before doing the stringers anyway since the center V is so worn on the outside. And since I already did a lake leak check I'm hoping that will be fine.011.jpg016.jpg015.jpg

I'll let some one else take the questions about the keel repair and painting.
But I had the same kind of hull supports on my Reinell. Mine were a little different in size and design. I used 8" x 2" planks of 3/4" ply for the sides, and I think it was 32" x 2" planks for the center. I cut them to stagger the joints. I don't think you need to replace with squares, but you could if you want. I think you could create something that would give support, but would still be flexible. You can check out my thread to get some ideas. It's a little different than the original, but it serves the same purpose.
