Well I started the 1973 9.5 sportwin that I bought and the thing fired right up!! Purred like a kitten. My question is...will the water escape the power head completely when i shut the motor down so it doesn't freeze and cause any cracks while it sits in my garage until spring?

When it's upright (normal running position) the water will drain out.

As above but if you have not done so check/change the gearcase oil. You do not want any water in there to freeze.
( you know that the oil drain and level screws are the two broad flat headed and slotted screws .. do not undo any smaller screws!)

Check that any drain holes around the gearcase assembly are not blocked.

To avoid damage to the screw plug driver slots use an impact driver with the correct driver bit. Replace the seals on the plugs before refitting. Bad seals are often the cause of water getting in. Use a suitably large screw driver to tighten the plugs. Would be a very good idea to pull the lower unit and replace the water pump impeller. They need replacing every couple of seasons.
