73 sportwin high idle, no throttle response

Just bought this outboard on CL but the guy didnt have any accessories for me to start it before I bought it, so I took a chance and paid the man. Got it home and bought the bladder/hose and rabbit ears, started it up- started in 4 pulls and ran great- really great! However it runs at full blast, and the throttle on the handle doesnt seem to work. I pulled the cover and worked the throttle, it looks like it is at the lowest setting and when I give it gas, it is almost un-noticable but it does increase rpm's. I cant find any literature on setting the idle in this thing, any hints? Once I get the idle set, anyone know where I can find a diagram for the throttle linkage?

when I pulled the cover and worked the throttle by hand, I am referring to the throttle pin that is attached directly to the carb. Also, the full info on this motor is:
9.5 hp Evinrude Sportwin, model# 9322b

Thanks for the links, the second one seems very helpful. I dont think the adjustment at the knuckle will do much, since I believe the throttle linkage is broken. The rod under the tiller arm moves, but it doesnt have any effect on the rpm's. I was thinking maybe there was some kind of idle adjustment screw on the carb?

heh... of course, the obvious answer is the rich / lean knob on the front control panel... Ill try it tonight and see if it has any effect.

I would think you've got bigger issues than the slow speed needle. I would suggest not running the motor until you figure out how to slow it down. It is not good to rev. them to fast with no load. To idle the throttle plate will be just a tiny bit open. Once you achieve that then re-start it. Rick.

You need to understand that the throttle on an outboard works differently than say a dirt bike or a lawn mower. The initial increase in engine RPM when you twist the throttle handle is advancing the ignition timing only, it is in the second phase of throttle application (approx 1/3 and beyond) that the carb butterfly begins to open. I mention this because if you are looking for throttle response by manually controlling the carb linkage only, (without advancing the timing) you wont get the desired result.
BTW when the throttle grip is twisted counter clockwise as far as it goes, does the marker on the grip line up with the word FAST on the handle?
If not, the gears at the tiller handle elbow may have skipped, this happened to mine.
