I used to have a couple of diesel Mercedes and a good mechanic to keep them running (have neither the cars or the mechanic now, and miss both). Anyway, his go-to maintenance was ATF added to a tank of diesel fuel (6 or 7 oz., as I recall). Have to admit the injectors were never a problem. Maybe yours would benefit from the extra lube.

I do not think a 2% variance of the cap is critical , certainly not with home type measuring tools

measuring ohms or capacitance on such large caps may affect the meter capabilities.
ohm meters use 3 or 9 volts as as source battery to sense things and such a large cap may give weird results... that is all I can figure out.

the only way to draw conclusions would be to compare with other caps of the same size which is a costly undertaking....to find out the meters are simply reacting the same way vs caps being faulty

injector tested out => servicing by a shop.

capacitor testing is just an option not a certainty that the cause of your injectors demise is related....

tried oldboat's suggestion ? you indicated fuel pressure was fine . I do not know if this is indicative of a performing VST filter (cooling fuel recirculation) ...but did you service/inspect the vst filter ?

I don't think a 2% difference would be critical either, I do have a capacitor on my 25HP (I would think), not readily available at the moment, but will take a look. Unless the cap continues to get weaker and weaker, and faster when in operation on the engine. I've seen other evinrude cap's only being around 33000-39000uf, but will pop it on the capacity meter, won't cost me anything. I was wondering if the meter had enough juice to sustain the test on the large cap. Today i'll try the ~18,000uf cap I made, see what the meter does.

I know the cap is only one option, had I not seen this on the cap meter, i'd have ruled it out, or at least suspect it less that it might be, don't have an esr meter.

I don't see the VST filter mentioned in my manual either, although was well aware of it from working on the 25hp, and had inspected the filter, granted didn't pull it out, but didn't look clogged in any way. I put the fuel gauge on both the output and the return, seemed consistent. Perhaps it's time to try removing it to inspect further. After I narrowed the problem down to what I believe are 2 injectors failing as they run, didn't want to risk damaging the filter. A poor fuel supply should be affecting all, as they are on the same return line and supply.

If I had to place a bet, it would still be on the fuel injectors failing, granted still don't know the cause. IR Gun should be here tomorrow, and i'll put it on different components to double check temp's and see if certain injectors are heating up more than the others.

Haven't tried "oldboat1" suggestion, although I suppose I could, don't have any ATF on hand, but have plenty of XD100 and some smaller tanks that I could mix it in. Not sure what that test would be testing, perhaps keeping the injectors cooler, possibly lubing some parts that have friction?

not clear if you inspected the 25hp filter or the 150hp .....

be very careful checking the VST filter .... vst can nipples are easy to break causing a junked VST $$$ so easy going !! see utubes

you are correct about the common fuel buss distribution but who knows maybe some injectors reacted differently over time. fuel hoses have been known to crumble and plug the vst filter ... I know my 2005 75hp lines are starting to feel a bit mushy ...to mushy to my liking $$$$

Yes, I know, inspected both. On the 150HP I just visually inspected as best I could, didn't want to risk breaking it taking it out.

I guess it's possible that some injectors are heating up as they run/and or are clogged. We'll find out any abnormal heating shortly.

I wonder if putting an inline fuel filter on the return might help figure out if anything continues to clog anything, if it is. Would also mitigate the need to inspect the VST filter in the future i'd think.

For that matter a filter on the outgoing fuel supply could help aleviate clogging due to any breakdown on internal VST parts or crud created in there, assuming it didn't affect fuel supply pressure.

Not sure what fuel supply hose goes for a foot, but maybe you could replace the fuel lines yourself on your 2005 for a lot less money than buying the rails.

vst cone filter is easy to pull out with a large thread screw just screw in gently till it grabs then pull out

the line filter cleans inbound crap not deteriorated fuel hoses returning to the vst ..... via the inbound vst filter see diagram above

as to installing a filter on the return hose ... ya maybe...

I've seen the information regarding how to remove the filter, just didn't want to risk it, but thanks for clarifying, others could read this and be helped. I wonder if the fuel filters can handle ~35 psi, not sure.

Well, just ran the Star Trek Trim test, no change, but we pretty much knew that as the 4700uf capacitor did nothing.

The injectors feel the same temp to the touch.

I gave it gas when it started to go, and that smoothed it out and ran for an additional 10 minutes, after which giving it gas didn't help. I've noticed the same thing while using the software while increasing the fuel levels on the injectors, namely the 2 weak injectors, giving gas to the others didn't do anything.

Also, getting a good deal more of what appears to be vapor coming out of the exhaust when it starts to go.

Also hooked up the fuel pressure gauge again. Holds at a steady 35 psi, a few seconds AFTER the engine starts to act up, the pressure drops to 30, but it seems like it's just losing back pressure as the engine acts up, then the pressure drops, and it's still more than enough fuel pressure to the injectors.

strange the pressure drops... isn't the high pressure pump an electric
pump?

why would you have vapor coming out ... are you running on bad fuel ?
have you tried a different fuel source with fresh gas and some EV engine cleaner ??

It was cold out today here. Yes, i've tried a separate fuel source, mentioned that in my 2nd post. The high pressure pump is electric, I don't think it's strange at all, once you shut off the engine the pressure drops about 10psi, so there must be back-pressure from the injectors while running, and just running the fuel pump by itself in the software gave me less than when the engine is running.

looking more and more like a major piggy bank break coming... :-(

lasts hope would be finding a dead horse with used injectors you could recycle with the proper injector coefficient files.

Ya, well, that's what happens when Evinrude says "screw you" to their 2007 customers. I don't have the time for that I want to salvage tournament season.

we all have the sword above our head ....My rig still works great but I am thinking...slowly also about selling it all before the sword drops on me to ....

it has been my retirement gift to myself since 2005 but now having hit 71 ... on pension... I no longer wish to invest eqv. 30K$ to catch perch or walleyes.

Nothing to do with Evinrude going out of business, 2008 injectors are $250, but whatever, I need to catch some bass.
