74' 20hp Johnson problems.

Hello there. I bought a 1974 20hp Johnson. The coils where missing and the cylinder head was off and some other stuff. After some weeks and some work the engine was ready for start. I got some old coils to it. The first problem is that i dont know where to fasten the coils. There is no screwholes in the cylinder head so i had to fasten them in the By-Pass cover.

Over to the problem. When i've pulled some times it starts and runs in 1 sec and stops again. The guy said there was something wrong with the carburetor but what am i going to check in it?

Did you have the carb off and did you have it apart? May be clogged or scummed up. Put your hand over the intake and see if it pulls any fuel.

Yeah i've had te carb in pieces and cleaned it. You mean i put my hand where the carb and check if there comes any vacuum?

Yes exactly, that vaccume should pull fuel like a super choke. If it does not, then the problem is fuel related, most likely clogged jets or stuck float.

Hello there again. Ive now got the engine running. On idle it smokes a bit and doesnt run good. So i want to buy new coils to it, they are prob from 70's and have cracks so no good

But, can anyone tell me where to fasten the coils?? There are no fasten place in the cylinderhead where i thought they fastened the coils on these engines. Ive added two pictures :

From a 25hp... Here the coils are fastened to the top???

So anyone know where to fasten the coils on my engine??
