74 50hp Water pump question

I just got this motor from a realitive and have rebuilt the carbs and its running great. Unlike my old Mercury it does not have a tell tale. I have started it in a test tank and water sputers out of two slots high up on the back end. I am assuming this is the only way I know that the impeller is doing its job. Can anyone tell me the what I should be looking for to make sure the pump is working good. I dont really just want to have to replace it if it may not need it.

Hello, We have 50hp 71'Mercury and it has on the starboard side you will see a peehole, water should be coming from there as well. If not you have a possible blockage.

you missunderstood. I have an old mercury that has a tell tale. The question here is about an evinrude 74 50hp. I am not sure how good or vise versa, that the water pump is working. I see 2 slots at the top of the lower unit and water and exaust sputter out of them. Any light on this subject from anywone would be appreciated.
