When I took this apart I did not take the flywheel apart , do I have to take that apart to install the timing belt ?
I see that the shaft has a larger spline to aline , so marking the bolts before taking the flywheel apart then install inter/ belt/ then outer is that the way it goes

The flywheel itself is usually not taken apart.----It is pulled complete with the hub.---15/16" socket and a special puller.------You need to make sure that the crankshaft / distributor are timed properly.

Unless you left the timing belt in place beneath the flywheel, you will have to pull it. I also had to unbolt the stator from the top of the block to install my new timing belt. There is no way to thread it beneath the stator ring properly.

How did you get the belt out without removing the flywheel? Or was the belt broken?

Re: 74 850 timing belt install

I pulled the flywheel off as one part , the took off the stator
Now I want to put it all back , I have the belt on , then installed stator
Now trying to install the flywheel as one part can't seem to get the belt on
The questiuon is do you take the flywheel apart to put the belt on the inter pully then put the flywheel back together ?

As you put the flywheel in position you put the belt on the pulley.---Gently lower the flywheel while holding some tension on the belt.-------Done that many times.----No need to take bolts out of the flexplate at all.

Just as the other guys said. I did this exact thing a couple weeks ago. Before removing the flywheel, set the flywheel to TDC so that you can put it back on right.

When reinstalling the belt, line up the arrow on top of the distributor with the three dots on the flywheel.

There is a larger spline so the flywheel will only go on in one spot
Going to try this latter today , If I have to take it apart I will mark it before I do

There is no need to take the flywheel apart.-Those 8 bolts should be left in there for this job.

Not to sure if I have the timing right , but that can be changed

Re: 74 850 timing belt install

The manual states that if the arrow and the dots do not align perfectly that the arrow should be just to the right of the dots slightly. My 1974 850 timed that way and it started quickly and ran very well on the hose. That timing belt and holding pressure on it to get it installed was a lesson in patience! I marked the flywheel and the crankshaft spline with white out to help me get it oriented. Glad that you managed to get it on!

Re: 74 850 timing belt install

yes Doc279 , it was not the easiest task to get the belt on under there
The way on lined everything up I'm sure is wrong , but easy to change on the dist
waiting on gasket so I can set this back on and do compression testing , still don't know if this will be a good motor

Re: 74 850 timing belt install

I checked my compression prior to attempting to start it. With the engine cold and the carbs blocked open - I had 150 psi compression on all 4 cylinders. That was very encouraging!!!! I am anxious to get this motor mounted on my pontoon boat and run it up the lake.
I hope to get that done by next weekend. Lots of rain at the moment here but at least the temperatures are near 45 degrees.

If you need anything out of the manual - give me a shout. I can fax or scan and e-mail anything that you might need.

Compression test first , I hope to have 150 but it doesn't feel like much by hand
