I have a 74, 85 hp Johnson that was running great and all of a sudden, it bogged down and now, will not run w/ control. But if yo disconnect cables, and rev it by hand, it runs great but put it in gear and dies!!!! Please need help!!

Re: 74 85hp Johnson

Hi Bob....welcome to the forum.

Try a couple things.

With the control cables disconnected, run the controls through the operating range while watching the ends of the control cables. Go to forward. The shift cable should move first. Slowly go to WOT and watch the throttle cable end. Should move smoothly the length of it's travel.

At the motor, do this with some caution, start the motor and manually put it in gear. Now manually advance the throttle. If it advances smoothly manually, you probably have a problem with the control cables.

Are the cables very old and are there any cracks in the covering?

Thanks Outboard Jim, its not in the controls, its the motor, we replaced the control unit and cables last year, and are working good. It evn dies when you run the butterflies bye hand when put in gear, can't even feather then to keep running

you said runs without cables hooked up, put in gear then kills. motor would have to have more power once put in gear (I own a 71 Johnson 50hp had trouble with hose in gas tank, just a thought
