Having trouble picking up speed with this motor. Only on a 16 feet bay boat. It wants to increase speed but just stop at full throttle. Hits top speed of about 12 mph. dupard@cox.net

You say it gets to full throtle and then bogs down, or it just wont go. I guess i would have to know more about it but let me give you some suggestions.
1. If the motor is running well from idle to balls to the wall then it is either your prop is shot to hell, or you are not getting up on plane. But with the motor you have and the length of the boat you should have no problem getting up on plane.
2. If at full throttle and she starts to bog a little bit it could be as simple as taking the carbs off and giving them a good cleaning, also replace the fuel filters, and the plugs, and the fuel lines.
3. If it is still not getting up to speed your fuel mixture could be a little off, you should be running 50:1, wich is 3 oz of two stroke oil to 1 gal of gas.
4. If it is not getting up on plane then you can buy the fins for the motor wich help quite a bit. and check how the motor is trimmed in the water when you go to open her up could also be your problem. If its not one of these simple things then its time to get a little more expensive, let me know.

It just want go and get on plane. On a Louisiana fishing site 5 people suggested the high speed jets are gummed up.

Gummed jets are a possibility, Dupard.

You are probably running on only 2 cylinders. The other one is getting no fuel (gummed jets) or no spark.

Troubleshooting advice for power loss can be found at www.outboardrepairs.com

Good luck. :)

very carefully :)

the 1974 70hp evenrude that i am trying to trade (1974 evenrude whats it worth post) was doing the same thing when i got it, it had set for 2 years. a boat mechanic said to clean the carbs. I went home and started to take it apart. but i realized i might not get it back the same. so i took my camera and took before pics and some during pics. i also used my video recorder to tape the process. also you can use masking tape to mark where things go. a manual is a lot of help. i am one who hates to pay 65$ an hour to someone to fix some thing that i could do if i take my time. if all of this sounds to much then you might be better off paying to have it done. i did mine in about 3 hours and it cost me 10$ for a few cans of berrimans carb cleaner. hope this helps :)

Attempted it myself but could not figure out how to take the linkage apart. Will tackle it again tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.

The cheapest price I found was $150 to clean the carbs.

Yippy Hurray!!! Figured out that the chock linkage just pops out. Took about 20 minutes to remove the carbs. Now, Please tell me what i'm looking for to see if gummed up? And where is the high speed jets. The guy I purchased the motor from just cleaned the carbs in November and the boat setup until I purchased it a couple of weeks ago. He was running old gas to demostrate the engine to myself and a freind. Gaskets looks brand new. Where should I go from here?
-------------------------------------------------
Wikelam --- 1 part down 2 to go!!!!!

You forgot to mention that old gas part until now, hopefully you have added fresh gas since then. Anyway just take the bowls apart on each carb and see if the inside is gummed up, then you can look down the jets from the inside and see if they are gummed up. Just to be safe you can soak them in carb cleaner and get rebuild kits, they are not too expensive. Then it's just a matter of putting them back together in reverse and test driving, and keeping your fingers croosed. Good Luck man.

I don't know exactly what you guys mean by " gummed up" but taking the bowl apart, screws from the jets, and soaking them yeilded me a lot of little debris and stuff that came from out of no where. Like little rocks and sand particules. Also cleaned the rust colored stuff from inside the bowl. Only one was really rusty like.
-------------------------------------------------
Next up. Put it back together and test. Wish me luck!!!

Well, everything is back together and I hooked it up on a exaust hose and it sounds alot better. But, the ultimate test will be tomorrow since it's raining in New Orleans. :D
