Hello,

I have a 74 Glastron v-179 with a Volvo Penta AQ 130 and 270 outdrive. When I try to raise or lower the outdrive nothing happens. When I push down on the switch, nothing happens. When I lift up on the switch, I hear the motor but nothing happens. Any help on this would be much appreciated. I am a complete novice when it comes to boating.

Thanks,

Kevin

Re: 74 Glastron tilt/trim question

If the outdrive is all the way down, the motor shouldn't run if you try to lower more. If the motor runs when you try to raise it but the outdrive doesn't raise than you have something wrong. I would try raising the outdrive up manually and strap it up. then run the tilt up and see if the vice rod extends out of the transom shield. If so, the retaining pawl may not be releasing correctly to allow the outdrive to tilt up, If the vice rod does not extend, something is wrong with the tilt mechanism itself.

let us know what you find.

Re: 74 Glastron tilt/trim question

Hello,

I am not sure what the vice rod is but there is a screw type thing(sorry for the lack of technical explanation) coming from the transon shield. It looks like what you see on a garage door opener(the plastic screw mechanism) It doesnt look like it comes down far enough to trigger the paw or release. I hope this is helpful. I could try and get a pic if thats helpful.

Yes it looks exactly like that. It looks like about an inch of the vice rod is visible coming out of the transom shield. However it does not seem to be moving when the switch is pressed. I hear the motor running but no movement. I will try to get a pic. Thanks again for your help.

After looking again at the diagram, I am thinking the vice rod might be broken because there is definately a screw type mechanism coming out of the bottom. I will try and get a pic tonight or tomorrow.

Re: 74 Glastron tilt/trim question

Well I have no pictures but that is because I dont need them. I used the diagram plus the manual on iboats and was able to remove the lift assembly. Everything checked out ok except the vice rod. It is bent. So bent that it froze in there and sheared the pin. Luckily the worm gear and the other parts are good. Now I am in the market for a vice rod. Its possible to try and bend it back but I think that is asking for trouble.

Make sure you get the part that screws onto the top of the vise rod, They come as a set. Mine was bent, easy fix. I'm sure its from trailering the boat on the tilt mech. Find one on Ebay. I think all the vise rods were the same for 25 years or so.

Well it looks like I will be needing a worm gear kit too. They are very expensive. I hope to find one on Ebay or something.
