I think I am having issues with my ignition switch and want to replace but I can not just pop it out to replace. Do I need to take my remote control completely apart in order for the change or is there any short cuts. There is a horn (I think it is a warning device) in my way and I cannot just drop it out of the proper spot. Any suggestions. I have taken the lower half off and can see the wires, the horn like thingy and my control lever anchors. I was thinking it would just drop out. By the way is this horn like gadget a warning device, what would it warn me of too hot maybe? There was a time recently the engine not running it started to blare and I took lower half off and jiggled wires and it stopped. so I am thinking I might have wires loos there.

Reason for wanting to change the ignition switch is when cruising along the water I would jiggle the key and the boat slows to near half the speed I was going. I think there might be loose wire or corrosion.

I noticed tonight after tinkering with it I now have a light at my Speedo that I didn't have there before, so I am leaning again some loose or corded wires in the system under or in the remote control panel.

Thanks for your help.

You will have to split the control box to install a new ignition switch. That engine has a single overheat warning switch, likely in the starboard head. (later models have one in each head.) When the switch senses cyl head temps of 212 degrees, it will short to ground, setting off the (constant) hot horn warning signal. You should test to see that the horn functions while you have the control box split apart in case it is not functioning.

Thanks, now will I have to take off from the wall of the boat with the two mounting bolts from the back to gain access to the screws that hold the top/second half of the control then? I can not see anymore screws from the front.

It really depends on the style remote control you have. The handle is usually held on with a set screw or a nut, sometimes a screw. Get the handle off then the top portion may lift right off. Its usually easier if its not attached to the panel of the boat. Make sure you disconnect the battery before you start.

I would suggest that you check each wire terminal on engine and under dash for corrosion. Clean each wire end and terminal with a wire brush. Replace any damaged ones. Use good terminals that have heat shrink built in. Calterm makes some that seem to work well. Tighten with a wrench. Include the battery in your endeavor.
