Re: 74 inline 6 carb problems

Its coming from the exhaust plate side. Water runs under the baffle inside and if it leaks you'll get nice steam cleaned cylinders. Often times the baffle gets warped or corroded as well . Take the plate off and have the baffles trued up. Use OEM gaskets. Terrible design and a common problem on inlines.

You might have a look and pull the lower end cap. That was the offender on my 73 850 for letting water in. Have to pull the power head though....

thanks for the help.

I will have to look into that. I may end up just finding a deal on a johnson/evinrude and forget about this merc. this is my second merc, and either one has not run well at all. I have always had good luck with the johnson's and evinrudes.

Thanks for all the help.

If you want something that you get to work on all the time and has quirky problems that you can become an expert diagnosing, the inline Merc is a great motor. If you want something that runs all the time get a V4 Johnson or a late model Mercury 2.0-2.5.

I have had several v4 johnson and they are great. Love those motors! I am not a merc fan when it comes to outboards!

Wellll ,you have a 38 year old motor that sat for at least a year, you did not know enough to change the impeller, fuel pump or how to adjust the idle screw, then you had to buy a ignition switch that has nothing to do with the actual motor and by the way NAPA sells. Now your first REAL issue, a possible bad gasket or corroded old baffle and you throw in the towel..Please buy a 38 year old johnnyrude and all your troubles will go away, make sure you get the electric shift model .Old is old.
