I just did the pump rebuild and the pump is working now but I am getting water coming out of an area that I don't remember it coming out of. I dont know how to describe it so I have a picture. I dont know what you call the part of the motor that is between the lower unit and the head? Its just dead space with the water tube and driveshaft running through it.
You can see from the picture that there is quite a bit of water pouring over that section I circled in red.
One thing I noticed tonight while idling was there would be alot coming out of there with the muffs on. After a bit the thermostat would kick and water would flow through the engine to cool it, and it was at that time that no water would pour over that section then. And if you put your hand where the water outlet is, you could feel the warm water and the side of the head cooled down. Then that process would start over.
Is this ok? It sure doesnt look good. Is the pump pumping TOO strong so it is squirting out wherever it can? It has been 6 years since I have used the boat so I don't really remember that is normal or not. None of my manuals really talk much about that section of the engine or upper or lower unit.
I haven't taken it out on the lake yet until I understand what is going on here.
Oh it also might look a little funny because I took off the front and back exhaust housings - actually I have lost the back one. They dont appear to be anything but trim pieces though. Thanks.
Hopefully this picture post works - I'm trying to grab it from my flickr account:
